A single lamp controller and a smart pole gateway are not interchangeable. In a connected lighting project, the controller normally manages an individual luminaire or lighting circuit, while the gateway coordinates communication among devices and the management platform. Defining the roles clearly prevents duplicated equipment and missing functions in a tender.

Single lamp controller: the luminaire-level job
Depending on model and driver compatibility, a controller can switch a luminaire, schedule dimming, report electrical measurements or communicate fault information. The exact dimming method may be 0–10V, DALI or another specified interface. A controller should never be assumed compatible with an arbitrary LED driver.
Ask for a wiring diagram identifying the AC feed, load output, driver control terminals, sensor inputs and protective devices. Verify the maximum electrical load rather than relying on a marketing wattage claim.
Gateway: the network and integration job
A gateway may aggregate data from multiple controllers, cameras or sensors and connect to an upstream network. It can also support local control logic, depending on the model and software. A gateway does not automatically replace the electrical switching or driver-level dimming performed by a lamp controller.
If a tender mentions cloud management, request a software demonstration showing alarm history, energy reports, user permissions and offline recovery. The interface between gateway and controller must be documented.
Common architecture choices
In a distributed arrangement, each lamp controller communicates through its own network connection. In another arrangement, several controllers connect through a nearby gateway. Both approaches can work; the optimal choice depends on pole spacing, radio conditions, cybersecurity requirements and service cost.
For a multifunction smart pole, the camera and display may need a separate high-bandwidth data path. Do not route video through a low-bandwidth lighting-control network without a verified design.
Factory acceptance test items
- Power-on, safe isolation and correct fuse or breaker selection.
- Switching and dimming response at defined levels.
- Controller addressing, remote command and schedule execution.
- Energy reporting accuracy against a reference meter where specified.
- Gateway disconnect, reconnection and stored settings.
- Platform login roles, alarm records and documented API access where required.
What buyers should include in the BOQ
List controller quantity per luminaire, gateway quantity per group of poles, communication modules, antenna, software licensing, cabinet components and commissioning services separately. This makes comparisons between suppliers meaningful and reduces the risk of discovering recurring fees after installation.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can one gateway manage multiple lamps?
Potentially, if the chosen communications protocol, coverage and controller capacity support it.
Is remote dimming guaranteed with any LED driver?
No. The dimming interface and driver compatibility must be checked.
Does a single lamp controller include cloud software?
Not necessarily. Platform access and fees should be listed separately.
