LED Floodlight IES Files for EPC Tenders: How to Verify Photometric Data

Buying LED floodlights for stadiums or yards? Check IES photometric files, tested optics, lumen output, tilt, glare and design revisions.

A floodlight labeled 300 W or 400 W does not tell an EPC designer where the light will fall. For stadiums, logistics yards and outdoor industrial sites, the photometric file is a critical purchasing document. An IES file or equivalent format describes measured light distribution so engineers can model the proposed luminaire arrangement.

Match the file to the exact product configuration

Ask for a photometric file tied to the exact luminaire model, optical lens, drive current and output configuration. A generic file from a similar housing is not enough. Confirm whether the data represents the complete luminaire including optics and losses. If the supplier changes LEDs, lens or driver current, request confirmation that the photometric data remains valid.

Understand what the IES file can and cannot prove

The file provides intensity distribution and associated test information for lighting calculations; it does not by itself prove electrical safety, ingress protection or long-term durability. Request the matching product datasheet and relevant test reports separately. Check the stated total luminous flux, power and photometric orientation against the tender schedule.

Use site geometry to test the design

A designer should model mounting height, pole positions, aiming angles, target plane, obstructions and maintenance factors. The calculation should examine average light levels, uniformity, glare and spill beyond the site boundary. A narrow beam may concentrate light efficiently in one zone but create bright spots if aimed poorly. The correct optic is selected by simulation, not by wattage alone.

Ask for calculation deliverables

For comparison of bids, require a layout plan, fixture schedule, aiming coordinates, calculation grid and clear assumptions. The buyer should know whether the calculation includes adjacent buildings, spectator areas, traffic routes or other sensitive boundaries. Make sure the version of the file used in the calculation is the version of the fixture that will be delivered.

Set an acceptance and change-control process

If a proposed substitute has a different IES file, the engineer should rerun the lighting model before approval. At installation, check bracket tilt and aiming against the approved schedule. Photometric files should be archived with the final as-built documentation so future replacements do not degrade the lighting result.

RFQ and Commissioning Checklist

  • Exact luminaire model and optical lens designation
  • IES or LDT photometric file with test identification
  • Datasheet showing input power and lumen output
  • Mounting height, tilt and aiming coordinates
  • Site model, calculation grid and maintenance factor

Frequently Asked Questions

Is an IES file the same as a product brochure?

No. It contains photometric distribution data used in lighting calculations.

Can I use one IES file for every wattage in a product family?

Only if the manufacturer confirms the data correctly represents the exact supplied configuration.

Does higher wattage always mean better stadium lighting?

No. Optical distribution, aiming and glare control are decisive alongside total output.
