Importers and EPC contractors buying high mast lighting poles should assess more than unit price. Fabrication tolerances, steel traceability, weld quality and corrosion protection influence installation risk and long-term maintenance.

1. Confirm the Approved Pole Drawing
Before cutting steel, confirm the nominal height, tapered shaft geometry, section lengths, steel grade, wall thickness, base plate, bolt circle, cable entry and access details. The engineering drawing must also define applicable standards and design wind conditions. Do not reuse dimensions from a different pole height without structural verification.
2. Steel Cutting and Octagonal Pole Forming
Steel plates are cut to the fabrication schedule, then formed using bending equipment. For octagonal tapered poles, forming accuracy affects straightness, fit-up and assembly of multi-section shafts. Check the plate identification, bend lines, shaft profile and mating sections.
3. Welding and Base Plate Fabrication
Inspect longitudinal seams, base plate connections, weld continuity and dimensions. Welding procedure, personnel qualification and nondestructive examination requirements should be established by the approved project specification.

4. Galvanizing and Surface Treatment
Hot-dip galvanizing helps protect outdoor steel structures against corrosion. For coastal sites, confirm the required coating standard and inspection plan; additional finishes may be considered where specified. Buyers should request coating inspection records instead of relying on appearance alone.
5. Factory Inspection Before Shipment
- Check overall and sectional dimensions against the approved drawing.
- Verify base plate holes, anchor bolt compatibility and access openings.
- Review weld and coating inspection records.
- Confirm trial assembly where required.
- Agree on packing protection, markings and loading method.
6. What to Include in Your RFQ
Provide the BOQ, technical drawings, pole height and quantity, design wind speed, LED floodlight weight and projected area, installation location, required standards and destination port. A clear RFQ reduces revisions and avoidable site costs.
FAQ
Can high mast poles be customized?
Yes. Shaft profile, height, accessories and finish can be reviewed against the project specification and engineering requirements.
Is hot-dip galvanizing sufficient for coastal sites?
It depends on the corrosivity category, design life, coating specification and maintenance plan. Confirm the protection system for the actual site.
