Port High Mast Lighting Design: Container Yard and Logistics Terminal Guide

Plan high mast LED lighting for ports and container yards. Learn about glare, pole placement, corrosion, wind loads and project RFQs.

Port high mast lighting needs to support safe nighttime movement across container yards, truck routes and logistics terminals. A suitable design balances visibility, glare control, structural loading, corrosion resistance and maintenance access.

1. Map Operational Zones Before Choosing Pole Heights

Separate container stacks, crane operating zones, gate areas, roads and pedestrian routes. Each zone may have different lighting criteria and obstructions. Positioning high mast poles without a site plan can create shadows or unnecessary glare.

2. Design for Uniformity and Glare Control

Specify target illuminance and uniformity according to the applicable local standard and task. Evaluate LED floodlight optics, aiming angles, mounting heights and obstructions using a photometric model. Wattage alone does not establish lighting performance.

3. Consider Coastal Corrosion

Salt exposure can accelerate deterioration of unprotected steel and electrical equipment. Specify appropriate hot-dip galvanizing or another approved corrosion-protection system, luminaire ingress protection and an inspection schedule based on the site environment.

4. Verify Wind and Structural Loads

The high mast pole must be checked for local design wind conditions, luminaire wind area, mounting arrangement and foundation interface. Base plates, anchor bolts and soil conditions require coordinated engineering review.

5. Plan Safe Maintenance Access

Maintenance doors, cable routing, platforms, ladders and other access features depend on the approved design. Site operators should consider how fixtures will be inspected or replaced without disrupting terminal operations.

6. RFQ Checklist for Port Contractors

  • Port layout or CAD drawing and operational zones
  • Required illuminance and glare criteria
  • Proposed pole locations and heights
  • Wind and corrosion exposure requirements
  • LED luminaire arrangement and electrical supply
  • BOQ, delivery schedule and destination port

FAQ

What is the best high mast height for a container yard?

There is no universal height. Site geometry, crane clearance, lighting targets and structural requirements determine the design.

Can LED floodlights reduce operating costs?

Efficient LED systems may reduce electricity and maintenance needs compared with older systems, but savings depend on the baseline installation, controls and operating hours.
