Double-arm street lighting poles are considered for central medians and road layouts where two luminaires need to serve opposite directions. A 12m design may be appropriate for some projects, but pole height alone cannot determine spacing, outreach or structural safety. EPC contractors should request a layout and a project-specific structural drawing before ordering.

Single-arm versus double-arm placement
A single-arm pole generally serves a defined side of the carriageway. A double-arm pole can support two lighting directions, often from a central median. The layout depends on road width, lane arrangement, median width, vehicle clearances and the selected luminaire optics.
Two luminaires do not automatically provide twice the useful roadway illumination. A photometric calculation should check maintained luminance or illuminance, uniformity, glare and spill light under the applicable road-lighting requirements.
Outreach and arm geometry
Arm outreach determines where the luminaire sits relative to the pole centerline. The design also needs mounting angle, luminaire weight, projected wind area, bracket connection and cable routing. For decorative poles, the arm geometry may be part of the architectural design and should not be altered during quotation without approval.
Confirm whether the two arms are symmetrical. Unequal arms or different luminaire weights may create different bending and torsion effects.
Structural and foundation details
The approved drawing should specify pole material and grade, height, taper, wall thickness, base flange, weld details, access door and corrosion protection. Anchor-bolt diameter, quantity and embedment are not universal for 12m poles. They depend on wind load, soil conditions and structural calculations.
Ask whether the supplier includes the anchor-bolt template, nuts and washers. A missing template can delay site installation even when the pole itself arrives on time.
What to put in the 12m pole RFQ
- Road cross-section and lighting design target.
- Total pole height and required mounting height.
- Left/right arm outreach and mounting angles.
- Luminaire quantity, weight and wind-exposed area.
- Site wind speed and applicable structural code.
- Flange and anchor-bolt drawing; foundation responsibility.
- Galvanizing, topcoat, color and packing requirements.
Pre-shipment verification
Review a signed general arrangement drawing and connection details. Inspect welding, coating and pole straightness according to the agreed inspection plan. Match each pole section and bolt set to its packing label.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is a 12m double-arm pole always installed on a median?
No. The road geometry and lighting calculation determine its position.
Can the two arms carry different floodlights?
Only after the luminaire weight, mounting interfaces and structural effects have been checked.
Are foundations included in the pole price?
Not always. Require an itemized quotation.
