When sourcing a high mast lighting pole, buyers often focus on pole height and LED wattage. However, safe access, electrical protection and foundation hardware are just as important. This guide explains the main components of a high mast lighting system and what to include in your request for quotation (RFQ).
What Is a High Mast Lighting Pole?
A high mast lighting pole is a tall structural support for multiple floodlights, commonly specified for stadiums, ports, container yards, highways and large public areas. The complete system may include a tapered steel shaft, luminaire mounting frame, access equipment, electrical distribution and foundation hardware. Not every project needs every accessory: the approved drawing and local safety requirements control the final configuration.

1. Pole Shaft and Base Flange
The shaft is typically fabricated from structural steel, often in tapered polygonal sections. Buyers should specify overall height, top and bottom diameters, wall thickness, steel grade, section joints, corrosion protection and design wind speed. The base flange connects the shaft to the foundation through anchor bolts. Flange dimensions must match the structural calculation and approved anchor-bolt layout.
2. Access Ladder and Safety Cage
For fixed-access high mast designs, a ladder provides maintenance access. Depending on height and local regulations, the design may require a safety cage, fall-arrest rail or other approved fall-protection system. Some high mast systems instead use a lowering headframe, so a fixed ladder is not always appropriate.
3. Maintenance Platform and Guardrails
A maintenance platform provides a working area near the floodlight array. Where specified, it should include appropriately engineered guardrails, access openings, slip-resistant surfaces and safe load capacity. A platform is not automatically included with every pole height: confirm it explicitly in the BOQ.
4. Floodlight Mounting Ring, Brackets and Headframe
The top mounting arrangement may be a circular ring, crossarms or a custom frame. Confirm the number of luminaire positions, bracket dimensions, aiming angles, cable routing and total supported weight. A fixed headframe differs from a lowering system with winch, wire ropes and pulleys; choose according to maintenance strategy.
5. Maintenance Door and Removable Panel
An access door near the base allows technicians to reach terminal blocks and electrical protection components. Specify door dimensions, lock, removable panel, cable clamps and the required degree of protection. Its opening must be accounted for in structural design.
6. Fuse Holders, Terminal Blocks and Internal Wiring
Electrical accessories may include fused outgoing circuits, distribution terminals, connectors, cable glands, cable clamps and earthing conductors. The number and rating of fuses depend on the lighting circuits and approved electrical design. Do not assume a standard fuse count fits every high mast.
7. Earthing and Lightning Protection
Depending on the site risk assessment and applicable standards, the system may require an earth connection, bonding, surge protection and lightning protection components. Their selection should be coordinated with the electrical engineer and site grounding design.
8. Anchor Bolts, Templates and Foundation Accessories
Common foundation supply items include anchor bolts or J-bolts, nuts, washers, positioning templates and related reinforcement details. Bolt quantity, diameter, embedment and foundation dimensions must be engineered for the actual soil and wind conditions. Never substitute a generic bolt set without approval.
9. LED Floodlights and Drivers
Specify the number of floodlights, rated power, optics, color temperature, ingress protection, driver type, surge protection and photometric files. Lighting calculations should verify uniformity and glare, not just total watts.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does every 20m high mast pole need a ladder and platform?
No. These are project-specific requirements. Fixed-access and lowering-headframe systems have different maintenance approaches. Confirm the approved specification and local safety rules.
Are anchor bolts included in a high mast pole quotation?
Not necessarily. Ask suppliers to itemize anchor bolts, templates and all foundation accessories to avoid omissions.
What should an EPC contractor send for a quotation?
Share the pole height, project location, design wind speed, applicable standard, soil/foundation information, floodlight quantity and wattage, mounting arrangement, access requirements, corrosion protection and BOQ.
