Coastal LED Floodlights: Corrosion, IP Rating and Surge Protection

Coastal LED floodlight procurement checklist: corrosion-resistant finishes, IP rating, surge protection, cable entries and maintenance.

Ports and coastal industrial sites challenge floodlights with salt-laden air, moisture, wind and difficult maintenance access. An IP rating alone does not guarantee long-term corrosion resistance. Importers should evaluate the housing, fasteners, cable connections, mounting brackets and electrical protection as a complete system.

IP rating and corrosion resistance are different

An ingress-protection rating describes resistance to defined dust and water ingress tests. It does not establish that a housing or bracket will resist salt corrosion for a given service life. Likewise, a painted enclosure may look intact while unprotected screws or dissimilar-metal joints deteriorate.

Ask for the actual product IP test documentation and coating or corrosion test evidence relevant to the project. Avoid accepting broad claims such as “marine grade” without a defined specification.

Inspect the complete luminaire assembly

Review the housing alloy, protective finish, lens material, gasket design, screws, mounting bracket and cable gland. Pay attention to drainage, condensation and any joints exposed to salt spray.

Where stainless fasteners meet aluminum components, ask the manufacturer how galvanic corrosion is managed. Installation damage to coatings can create local corrosion points.

Surge and grounding coordination

Outdoor floodlights may be exposed to switching surges and lightning-related disturbances. Specify surge protection in coordination with the electrical engineer, earthing design and site distribution board. A luminaire-level surge device does not replace a properly designed site protection system.

Confirm the rated supply voltage, driver protection, circuit breaker coordination and replacement procedure for damaged surge devices.

Port project RFQ checklist

  • Distance from sea and environmental exposure description.
  • Required ingress protection and test report.
  • Housing and bracket materials; coating specification.
  • Fastener and cable-gland material details.
  • Surge protection and grounding requirements.
  • Mounting height, aiming, wind load and vibration.
  • Maintenance access and spare driver availability.

Practical inspection before shipment

Check coating uniformity, exposed cut edges, fastener quality and sealing. Inspect cable entries with the actual cable diameter. Agree on the test and inspection standard before production rather than after goods arrive at the port.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does IP66 mean salt-spray resistance?

No. IP and corrosion resistance are separate performance properties.

Should every coastal project use the same coating?

No. Exposure severity, required service life and maintenance strategy affect the specification.

Can surge protection eliminate lightning damage?

No. It reduces defined risks when correctly coordinated, but cannot guarantee immunity.
