A smart pole display can communicate transit updates, public information or approved advertisements, but its specification is often reduced to a screen size. For a municipal EPC tender, the display is a structural, electrical, thermal and software subsystem. The checklist below helps buyers request comparable quotations.

Specify the display by use case
Begin with viewing distance, expected content, daylight conditions and installation orientation. Pixel pitch should be selected from actual viewing needs rather than a single marketing claim. Ask for active display dimensions, module layout, pixel pitch, rated and maximum brightness, viewing angle, refresh rate and intended operating temperature range. Local advertising and traffic-sign regulations may restrict content or brightness.
Do not confuse average and maximum power
A screen’s peak electrical demand may be materially higher than its typical consumption. Require both figures under clearly stated conditions. Include controller, communications, ventilation or heating equipment in the power budget. Confirm whether the display operates continuously, follows a schedule or dims automatically at night. The street-light circuit and display circuit may need independent protection and control.
Structural load and vibration
The screen enclosure increases projected wind area and shifts the center of mass of the pole assembly. Request the actual enclosure dimensions, weight, attachment detail and wind design criteria. The mast and base flange must be checked for the complete configuration, not only the lighting arms. A taller or wider display cannot be substituted without engineering review.
Heat, water and maintenance
Outdoor screens require an enclosure and thermal strategy suited to the local climate. Ask how heat is removed, how condensation is managed and whether maintenance is performed from the front or rear. Confirm access clearance, gasket replacement, spare modules and safe isolation. IP rating claims must apply to the actual assembled enclosure and connectors, not only an individual LED module.
Software and ownership questions
The content management system may be provided by the city, an integrator or a screen vendor. Define the media player, supported formats, network connection, remote scheduling, user permissions, emergency message workflow and update policy. Confirm language support and whether cloud subscriptions or ongoing data charges are included.
RFQ Checklist for EPC Buyers
- Screen dimensions, pitch, brightness and viewing distance
- Rated and peak electrical load
- Wind-exposed area and mounting weight
- Enclosure cooling, water ingress and service method
- Controller, CMS, network and cybersecurity scope
- Warranty split between pole, screen and electronics
- Factory acceptance test and on-site content test
Frequently Asked Questions
Can every smart pole accept an LED display?
No. The pole must be engineered for the screen’s weight, projected area and service requirements.
Should the screen stay on all night?
That is a project decision based on approved use, energy budget and local brightness rules.
Is the screen included in a standard pole quotation?
Only when explicitly itemized in the approved BOQ and configuration.
