Street Light Pole Wind Load: What Engineers Need Before Approving Steel Thickness

A buyer's guide to street light pole wind load: design speed, exposure, arm outreach, fixture area, steel thickness and structural approval.

A street light pole should not be purchased by height and wall thickness alone. A 10 m pole with a compact LED head can face a different design load from a pole of the same height carrying a large decorative arm, solar panel or camera. Overseas EPC buyers need a consistent set of inputs so the structural engineer can check the actual assembly.

Design wind speed is only the starting point

Ask the project engineer to define the governing wind standard, reference speed, terrain or exposure category, topography and any special local requirements. Wind pressure and design actions are not interchangeable with a casual claim such as ‘resists 130 km/h’. A manufacturer’s wind-speed statement is meaningful only when the configuration and design assumptions are documented.

Calculate the exposed area of the complete assembly

The shaft, arm, luminaire, solar panel, banner brackets and smart devices all contribute projected area and moments. A camera or display added after approval can alter the loading. Request dimensions, mass, attachment locations and the number of fixtures. For double-arm poles, both the arm geometry and the distribution of equipment should be included, even if the two sides appear balanced in a brochure image.

Why wall thickness alone is not a safety rating

Steel grade, shaft taper, cross-section, weld quality, base connection and unsupported height all influence structural performance. A thicker wall does not compensate automatically for an undersized flange or poor anchor arrangement. Ask for the approved drawing and design check rather than comparing two quotations only by nominal steel thickness.

Check serviceability and maintenance access

Pole movement, vibration and fatigue may matter for long arms, cameras and sensitive electronics. Service vehicles also need safe access. The FHWA roadway lighting guidance recommends considering maintenance and pole placement in the system design. Confirm that the selected location and equipment can be maintained without unnecessary road closures.

Turn design assumptions into a procurement hold point

Before mass production, freeze the pole arrangement, arm outreach, fixture schedule, base flange and anchor pattern. If the contractor later changes the LED head or adds a solar panel, ask the responsible engineer to review the design. An updated fabrication drawing should carry a revision number so old and new configurations are not mixed on site.

FAQ

Is 4 mm steel always enough for a 12 m pole?

No. Required thickness depends on geometry, loads, material, connections and design code.

Can a solar panel be added to a standard pole later?

Only after its weight, wind area and mounting arrangement are checked.

Does a wind-speed claim replace engineering calculations?

No. Buyers should request the governing assumptions and a project-specific structural review.
