Street Light Pole Handhole and Cable Routing: EPC Installation Checklist

Review street light pole handholes, access doors, cable entry, earthing and maintenance clearance before approving EPC installation drawings.
Smart pole bodies with protective surface finishes, base flanges, and access openings arranged inside a manufacturing workshop.

A street light pole can look correct in elevation yet be difficult to wire or maintain. The handhole, access door and cable entry determine whether an electrician can safely terminate conductors and service protection equipment after installation. These details deserve a drawing review before the pole is fabricated.

Locate the handhole for safe access

Coordinate access-door orientation with the road edge, footpath, traffic exposure and any nearby barriers. The opening must permit the specified electrical equipment and maintenance method without weakening the structural design. The structural engineer should review opening geometry and any reinforcement requirements.

Coordinate the cable entry and foundation

Show the underground duct exit, cable entry opening, bend radius and conductor routing on the same coordinated drawing as the base flange and anchor-bolt template. A pole foundation that aligns structurally can still obstruct cable entry if electrical and civil drawings are produced separately.

Specify earthing and internal equipment

Define the required bonding point, terminal enclosure, fuses or breakers where applicable, and accessible identification labels. Verify conductor sizes, protective devices and installation method against the project’s electrical design and local code. Never assume a generic pole drawing is a substitute for a project-approved electrical schematic.

Inspect and hand over the completed installation

Before energization, check door fit and fasteners, cable glands or protective bushings, absence of sharp edges, bonding continuity and protection against moisture entry. Record as-built cable routes and component identifiers for future maintenance. Make sure access doors can be opened without removing unrelated street furniture.

EPC and importer RFQ checklist

  • Handhole location and orientation
  • Structural approval of access opening
  • Cable duct and flange coordination
  • Earthing/bonding and terminal arrangement
  • Door sealing, fasteners and sharp-edge protection
  • As-built and maintenance records

Frequently asked questions

Is one handhole size suitable for every pole?

No. It depends on pole structure, equipment and safe service access.

Can the civil contractor finalize the foundation alone?

Electrical duct entry and pole base details should be coordinated before concrete work.

Is a closed access door proof of weather protection?

No. The specified seals, hardware and installed condition must be inspected.
