A stadium floodlight that appears steady to spectators may produce banding or brightness variation on video. Camera frame rate, shutter settings, driver behavior and dimming controls interact. Buyers planning sports broadcasts or high-speed recording should define a camera-compatibility test rather than accepting a generic ‘flicker-free’ label.

Describe the camera use case
State whether the venue requires ordinary recording, live broadcast, slow-motion replay or high-frame-rate analysis. Ask the broadcaster or camera specialist for relevant frame rates, shutter settings and acceptable image artifacts. These requirements are not the same as ordinary spectator lighting criteria.
Request model-specific driver information
Ask the luminaire supplier how light output is regulated and whether flicker behavior changes across dimming levels. Any claimed flicker percentage or frequency should be tied to a named model, driver, operating condition and test method. Do not infer camera performance from wattage, IP rating or LED chip brand.
Test the complete control configuration
A test at full power does not necessarily represent the stadium’s pre-event, training or broadcast dimming scenes. Where camera performance is critical, perform representative camera tests with the intended control settings and record the conditions. Also check glare, color consistency and photometric performance separately.
Write acceptance language before purchasing
Specify who supplies the test equipment, how results will be judged and what happens if the installation produces visible banding. Include the exact luminaire and driver revisions in the acceptance record. The goal is repeatable evidence, not an unqualified marketing promise.

Frequently asked questions
Does ‘flicker-free’ guarantee slow-motion compatibility?
No. It is not a substitute for a defined camera test under actual operating settings.
Does flicker affect every camera equally?
No. Results vary with exposure and frame-rate choices.
Can flicker be fixed only by changing wattage?
Not reliably. Driver and control behavior must be evaluated.
